PTFE tubing's high viscosity in the gel state (it does not truly melt) prevents it from being processed conventionally in extruders or injection molding. PTFE tubing is therefore dry molded or extruded in hydraulic extruders with (paste extrusion) or without (ram extrusion) lubricants.
Virtually total chemical resistance at temperatures up to 260 C. mean that tubing can handle the transport of all fluid chemicals and solvents, as small sizes such as in automatic laboratory analysis equipment to 1000mm diameter linings in process plant. Tubing can also be used to protect less resistant materials such as glass or stainless steel on stirrers, thermometer probes and vat heaters.
The combination of low friction and temperature resistance allows fluoroplastic tubing to be used in applications such as sleeve bearings, push-pull cables, non-stickroller covering etc.
