What is a PTFE rod?

PTFE rods, also known as Teflon rods, are unfilled PTFE resin (can contain recycled PTFE resin) molded, paste extruded or plunger extruded for processing various gaskets, seals and lubricating materials that work in corrosive media and electrical insulation parts used at various frequencies. Main properties of PTFE rod

Operating temperature: from -200℃ to 260℃; easy processability; aging resistance: it can be exposed to ozone and sunlight for a long time without aging; corrosion resistance: it can withstand strong acids, strong oxidizing agents, strong reducing agents and various organic solvents except molten alkali metals and fluorinated media; outstanding electrical insulation properties.

Other characteristics

Density: 2.16-2.20g/cm3; volume resistance>1×1018; surface resistance>2×1013; arc resistance>165s; water absorption<0.1%; low friction coefficient; non-adhesive surface: solid materials cannot adhere to its surface; non-combustibility: it will not burn in the air; non-toxic: it’s non-toxic, odorless and physiologically inert, and causes no harm to people and the environment.

Applications of PTFE rod

There are two kinds of PTFE rods: pressed rods and molded rods. Due to excellent chemical resistance and dielectric properties, and minimized friction coefficient, PTFE rods are mainly applied to long products and mechanical parts with non-standard specifications such as seals/gaskets, rings, wear-resistant plates/seat electricity, insulating parts, mechanical parts, and linings in the fields of oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical, instrument and equipment.
Chemical industry: It can be used as anti-corrosion material, produce various anti-corrosion parts, such as pipes, valves, pumps and pipe fittings, and act as the linings and coatings of reactors, distillation towers and anti-corrosion equipment.
Mechanical industry: It can be used as self-lubricating bearings, piston rings, oil seals and sealing rings, etc. Its self-lubrication can reduce wear and heat generation of machine parts and reduce power consumption.
Electronic appliances: It is mainly used in the manufacture of various wires and cables, battery electrodes, battery separators, and printed circuit boards, etc.
Medical materials: Its heat-resistant, water-resistant and non-toxic properties enables itself to be used as sealing and filling materials for medical devices (sterilization filters, beakers, artificial heart and lung devices) and artificial organs (artificial blood vessels, heart and esophagus).

Properties and applications of UHMWPE Rod

1.       Product characteristics of UHMWPE Rod

Excellent abrasion resistance, good resistance to low temperature impact, self-lubricity, non-toxic, water and chemical resistance, heat resistance is better than general PE, disadvantages are heat resistance (thermal deformation temperature) low, poor processing and molding, surface hardness, rigidity, creep resistance as general engineering plastics, expansion coefficient larger. UHMWPE has poor fluidity and extremely high viscosity in the molten state. It is a rubber-like high-viscosity elastomer. At the early stage, it can only be molded by pressing and sintering methods.

Higher mechanical properties than ordinary high density polyethylene. Excellent impact resistance, stress cracking resistance, high temperature creep resistance, low friction coefficient, self-lubrication resistance, excellent chemical corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, noise damping resistance, nuclear radiation resistance, etc.

The operating temperature is 100 ~ 110.Good cold resistance, can be used at -269.The product has a density of 0.935g/cm3 and a molecular weight of 2 million. Its tensile strength at break is 40MPa, elongation at break is 350%, elastic modulus at bending is 600MPa, and the cantilever beam is constantly impinged by the gap. Abrasion (MPC method)20mm.

2.       Application field of uhmwpe rod
Uhmpe bar can replace carbon steel, stainless steel, bronze and other materials for textile, paper making, food machinery, transportation, medical treatment, coal mine, chemical industry and other sectors. Study on Sintering of Ptfe


From the perspective of the three factors that determine the properties of PTFE products -- molecular weight, crystallinity and voidage, the voidage is mainly affected by the preforming pressure, and the molecular weight and crystallinity all change with the different sintering conditions. Therefore, sintering process conditions play a decisive role in the final properties of products such as density, hardness, permeability and mechanical properties.

Wang ping found that the sintering process of PTFE was affected by the rising and falling speed, sintering temperature and sintering time. The larger the product, the slower the speed of rising and cooling, the longer the sintering time. The sintering temperature of suspension resin is higher than that of dispersion resin. The sintering temperature of pure material products is higher than that of filled products. In general, the rate of warming is faster than the rate of cooling. In the same sintering furnace, pure material and filling products cannot be mixed; Products with different sintering conditions cannot be mixed. Products of different raw materials cannot be mixed. Taking the production of 3-layer molded circular plate with diameter of 1 m, thickness of 20 mm, double layer as pure ptfe and middle layer as filled ptfe as an example, the compression strength, bending strength, hardness and other mechanical properties of the circular laminated plate produced by this technology have been greatly improved.

Liu xianlan studied the forming process characteristics, forming method and mold design characteristics of PTFE, analyzed the defects and causes of PTFE products produced by cold pressing and sintering, and put forward the treatment methods. PTFE can be molded by a variety of preforming processes, such as molding, extrusion, hydraulic molding, push molding and secondary processing, and then sintered to the final product.PTFE molding is mostly made of suspended resin. When the thickness of sheet is less than 1.5mm, disperse resin is used. Wang ping studied the forming process of PTFE foam material. Suspended polytetrafluoroethylene is used as raw material, and condensed cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are selected as pore-forming agent. After mixing, preforming products are preformed and sintered. At the initial stage of sintering, drying process is adopted to make pore-forming agent escape, and then resintering stage is entered. Foam materials with different dielectric constants can be prepared in different proportions to meet various requirements.

Chen xu et al. conducted compression test and sintering test on PTFE, discussed the relationship between density, compression strength and compression modulus, and analyzed the compression strength of specimens under different sintering processes, and obtained more appropriate molding pressure and sintering process. The results showed that the compression strength of PTFE decreased with the increase of pressing pressure, and the compression modulus increased with the increase of pressing pressure. The molding pressure was 27.5mpa, sintering temperature was 380 C, and the insulation time was 4h.

In order to overcome the disadvantages of pure ptfe, such as poor abrasion resistance and large thermal expansion coefficient, Raytheon studied the bronze-filled particles in ptfe, and expanded the application scope of ptfe. The conventional warm pressing molding of ptfe is characterized by long cycle, poor performance, low dimensional accuracy and smoothness, while the warm pressing molding in this study has fewer working procedures, short cycle and significantly improved mechanical properties.
